This original soapstone carving was created by Cole Felix, also known as Nunga, an emerging Inuvialuk carver from Tuktoyaktuk, Northwest Territories.

Hello, my name is Cole Felix, also known as Nunga. I’m from Tuktoyaktuk, NT.
I got into carving small pieces with bone and wood in the summer of 2022 while I was working at Whale Camp. After I finished my first carving, I hadn’t realized how deeply I would get into carving. I love that it’s a good pastime, keeps my mind from wandering, and helps me clear my mind.
In 2024, I was in Yellowknife waiting with my fiancé to have our first child, so I thought I would spend some time in the shop with a good friend, Derrald Taylor. He helped me a lot and showed me a few tricks with carving soapstone, as it was my first time carving stone.
After I did my first soapstone carving, I was hooked on working with soapstone and have been keeping myself busy with it ever since. I hope to have a long career with carving.
